Australia Reports Highest Renewable Energy Use This Century
Australia’s Clean Energy Council released their 2016 report which shows an almost 3% rise in power provided by renewable sources from the year prior.
In 2016, renewable energy accounted for 17.3% of Australia’s electricity, 16% of which came from small-scale solar PV.
This rise in solar usage is continuing to boom into 2017. Warwick Johnston from energy consultancy firm Sunwiz says that 91 megawatts of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems were installed in the month of March alone.
“We already saw a surge starting to build up in 2016, and we were wondering if that was going to continue into 2017 and it really has just continued to skyrocket.”
“The price of solar has dropped low enough, and power prices are rising high enough, for this to make economic sense.”
The Australian Photovoltaic Institute has also released their latest industry analysis, putting rooftop solar capacity at almost 6GW with large-scale solar at 496MW. These figures are expected to grow to 33GW and 27GW respectively by 2040.
With electricity prices set to rise, the benefits of having a solar Power Purchase Agreement continues to increase as you can purchase solar power for 15 – 20c per Kwh as opposed to the average 30c being offered by retailers. Not only do you receive a low rate, this becomes a fixed rate for the next 10 years which allows you the security and peace of mind knowing your savings will continue to increase as grid prices increase heading to into the future.
